Just a few questions 😄

Hi all,

So I’m thinking of visiting Japan for 3 months from the UK (sometime in early spring). I just have a few questions that youtube/forums etc haven’t really answered too well or clearly.

For contexts – this would be my first large travelling holiday (so never needed to sort visas or anything before), would be going solo and would be backpacking/ travelling the whole of Japan.

1) what is the process like of getting a 3 month visa? Is it particularly long? Is it easy to attain? What sorta documents/proof do I need.

2) how much money would suffice for 3 months? Just a rough figure as I have very little clue to how expensive things are in japan. When I have googled all I find is budget’s for living not travelling.

3) ideally I would live to visit the entirety of Japan so North – South, does anyone have any itinerary recommendations or suggestions.

4) just generally any tips for staying in japan, travelling solo.

Again I’m from the Uk. Male, so if anyone can help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

  1. That’s a LONG time to stay in Japan for a holiday, so I’m curious how your plan to fund that. If you intend to work AT ALL while you’re there you will need a different visa. Otherwise, I think you can be on a tourist visa for up to 6 months but you can easily Google this.

How expensive it’ll be depends entirely on what you want to do while you’re there and what type of accommodation you want. You might get a better deal via Air BnB for long-term rentals but I’d plan this portion out after you sort your itinerary.

As for money, remember that although Japan has improved its card payment systems, it is still primarily a cash based society. This is more true if you plan to visit remote areas.

If you do a large money order from the Post Office (best deal is to order online for collection) you get preferential exchange rates.
