Itinerary advice: Tokyo -> Lake Kawaguchiko -> Hakone

Hi everyone,

Trying to fit in 1 night at a glamping site at Lake Kawaguchiko into our Japan itinerary. But it seems like going from Lake Kawaguchiko to Hakone is a bit of a journey with multiple transfers, 3+ hours traveling, etc.

Start in Tokyo, 5 nights -> Lake Kawaguchiko, 1 night -> Hakone, 1 night -> Osaka, 4 nights -> Kyoto, 4 nights -> Back in Tokyo for departure flight, 1 night

Does our plan seem doable? Should we try moving Lake Kawaguchiko towards the end of the trip for easier transportation or is the route to Hakone not as difficult as GoogleMaps makes it seem? Any input is greatly appreciated!

  1. Lake Kawaguguchi (Kawaguchiko) is on the northern side of Mt Fuji, and Hakone is south of Mt Fuji. So, essentially, the two locations are separated by Japan’s largest mountain.

Unless you have a rental car, the easiest way to get between the two is to go back to Tokyo via bus or train, then catch the train to Hakone and, yes, it will take a few hours and changes of trains.

  2. Make sense and doable.

From Kawaguchiko station take a bus to Gotemba premium outlet or Gotemba station. From there you can take a bus to Hakone. To reach the Gora area or Togendai, it will be about 2h30 total. Of couse total time can be much higher for example if you want to move from the other side of the lake to Hakone-Yumoto, yes, that can be 4 bus and 3,5+ hours in total.
