Would love your thoughts on a potential change at the beginning of my trip next spring. I am considering coming to Japan 3 days earlier than my original schedule via Nagoya, arriving 14 Mar. Since I’m already there, might as well take in nearby sights, right? Will it make sense to do Takayama for 1 day and Kanazawa as a day trip, before heading to Tokyo to resume the [original schedule](https://reddit.com/r/JapanTravel/comments/xrpo8g/itinerary_2wk_solo_travel_tokyokyotoosaka_march/)?
– **Mar 14**: Arrive Nagoya 1pm, check in and rest, watch a concert
– **Mar 15**: Go around Nagoya – shopping district, maybe Nagoya Castle and/or Maglev museum
– **Mar 16**: Head early to Takayama, catch morning market, have Hida beef for dinner, stay overnight
– **Mar 17**: Head early to Kanazawa, go around Oumicho market and other sites, leave late afternoon for Tokyo
The rest of my trip will be spent as follows:
– **Mar 18-24** Tokyo (meeting friends here)
– **Mar 25-28** Kyoto
– **Mar 29-Apr 1** Osaka
1. I’d really like to go to Takayama while near Nagoya area, but having second thoughts about tacking on Kanazawa (since I don’t plan going to Shirakawa-go at least on this trip) so I’m wondering if the day trip is worth the 2-3 hours spent going there (as opposed to coming back to Nagoya and onward to Tokyo)
2. Would it be worth going to Kanazawa as a day trip from Kyoto instead?
3. Is there a pass that could cover the trips here and to Tokyo? Not planning on using JR Pass as the 7-day pass wouldn’t make sense (I stay in Tokyo for 9 days)
Thanks again for any thoughts and suggestions!

Which Takayama? When I go to Google maps and type in Takayama at least 5 different places come up.
