What is QuicPay? How is it different from a normal NFC Card?

I noticed that when i add a Japanese card to Google pay it says it’s a QuicPay card and I can use it to pay at places that say they accept QuicPay. It also says I can make it the default card to pay for transit fares instead of the suica or pasmo card.

So now I am confused what is this QuicPay thing ?

  1. It’s a domestic electronic money (cashless) thing like iD / Edy / nanaco / WAON. It also seems to be the most popular one, with 188万 users vs 150万 for iD.

I am not sure if it can be used as a transit card, but I didn’t read too much into it as I only use iD.

You’ll need a domestic phone with felica/nfc support or a recent iPhone if you want to use it from your phone, otherwise it’s just a contactless payment card – that’s usually offered by a credit card company.
