Repeat N5 or go on to N4?

Hey guys. Apologies in advance for the possibly silly question, it was my first time taking the JLPT yesterday (N5) and well, I’m not too sure if I’ll pass yesterday’s exam and will just assume the worst for now.

Would it be worth redoing the N5 in 6 months time if I fail? Or would you recommend just going straight to N4 (if not in 6 months then in 1 year). I understand you don’t need to pass the previous level but would it be worth reviewing N5 materials (especially on my weakest parts aka listening) or just spend the time studying N4? TIA

  1. Thats a question only for you to know. what do you see value in the process, what is your end goal.

  2. Review the n5 grammar while continuing to improve your vocabulary and listening. Once your n5 grammar is 100% n5 passable move on and just see what you can do…anyways, n4 is no walk in the park. I just took if for the 2nd time. I’m feeling way more confident this time around

  3. Depends on how you feel. I personally would just move on to try the N4 next year.

However if you think it would be too demotivating to fail twice, just take the N5 to play it more safe.

If you don’t really care, or if you feel like it won’t demotivate you then just grind for the N4
