Marriage documents for UK citizen

Hi all,

I’m a UK citizen planning to get married in Japan to my Japanese partner sometime next year.

Since I’m visiting the UK over the Xmas holidays this year I was wondering if anyone has any insight into documents I might need to gather whilst I’m there, or anything else you found that you needed in a similar situation.

Thanks a lot!

  1. You don’t need any documents from the UK specially. You just need a Certificate of No Impediment from the UK embassy (there’s one in Tokyo). You’ll also need an official translation of your passport.

If you’re planning to stay in Japan, I’d bring back your birth certificate and your university transcripts and graduation certificate. You never know when you’ll need these. But it’s better to have them.

  2. Go here

and read the section on opposite sex marriage in Japan and download the .pdf file. Some things have changed from when they robbed me of around 40,000 Yen for the documentation several years ago.
