soo… advise…

My current company is kicking me out of the apartment 2 weeks before my contract ends… my new job is far away from where I currently work… I’m talking with my new employer to see if I can get an apartment mid February to have everything moved out by the start of March. However it means I’ll have to live in my car (which I’m no stranger to when I lived in the U.S.) or get a hotel (which would be super expensive.). Need to know if no laws are being broken just to be sure. The place I work in are Sutter scumbags and I know they can get me 2 extra weeks but they wont do it they want me to talk to the landlord (which my japanese is まあまあ) but that’s thier job the apartment is under thier name… looking for an some input.

  1. I don’t know if you are moving to a big city, but they usually have share houses. I guess find one without a year contract.

  2. ウィークリーマンション (what we might call serviced apartments) might suit your needs.

  3. Get a room at a residential hotel that has weekly rates. A lot of those rooms have a kitchenette, which makes it more convenient than a regular hotel. As someone else noted, they are referred to as weekly mansions (ウィークリーマンション). I stayed in one for a few weeks once, it was pretty decent.

  4. Why can’t you find an apartment on your own? Go talk to the landlord and tell them the day you will be moving out. Company can’t kick you out of your apartment.

  5. If the apartment is under their name they are your landlord not the person they contracted for the apartment with.

You simply tell them that you were unable to find alternative arrangements and you will be leaving on your last day of employment.

If they push back you let them know that if they do not let you stay for the remaining 2 weeks of your contract you will continue your residency until you are legally evicted.

Now you should know they have no right to enter/etc. the apartment without an eviction which will take 6 months and cost them a great deal of money. In the event they do enter document it and file a police report immediately. In the event they remove your belongings or try other funny business such as turning off utilities etc. come here for advice someone will advise you. Note – this doesn’t mean just call the police you have to follow up with the local police station (NOT THE KOBAN THEY DO NOT HANDLE THIS SORT OF PROBLEM) the police will provide an interpreter for you.

You should also know if they do have to evict you they’ll probably hit you up for unpaid rent etc. etc. etc. so once your 2 weeks are up be the better person and be out of the apartment.

  6. If it’s just 2 weeks, you could stay at a good friend’s house, Airbnb, capsule hotel, etc.
