思ってた – Was thinking, in the past.
思ってたんだ – 思ってた + の for explaining + copula.
The の stays a の if it’s in formal form like in 思っていたのです but here it is ん.
てた is a contraction of ていた because people often don’t enunciate the い sound inbetween
likewise てる is ている, and other sound contractions can occur like ておく becoming とく etc, these aren’t grammatical per se, it’s just causal speech pronunciation
The た is part of the ~ていた (contracted to ~てた) indicating ‘[past continuous](https://www.tofugu.com/japanese-grammar/verb-past-continuous-form-teita/)’.
The んだ part is the ‘[explanatory のです](https://youtu.be/lYvIOi8Q3I8)’ form.
