I intend to do a Master’s Degree in Japan. Any experience?

**First of all, I’m really sorry if this isn’t the right sub for this kind of question, but it was the only one I managed to find.**

I’ll keep it short – Due to having future plans in Japan, I’m considering doing a Master’s Degree there, applying as a normal student, not as a semester abroad.

* Do any of you have experience in this regard? What what the process like?
* Have you used any websites to search for relevant Master’s degrees?
* What were the requirements like? Did you have to take any tests?
* What was the necessary level of Japanese (assuming the courses were in Japanese)
* What were some of the biggest issues you faced?

Any input would be more than helpful and again, sorry if it’s the wrong sub for this sort of question!

  1. I’m starting my course in April. You may want to check the mext subreddit out, I think you can get info even if you’re not going to try for the scholarship. If you can’t find what you need there then you can also message me, but first things first pls google. So much information out there and it depends heavily on what you’re looking for.

  2. I did a year abroad during my masters degree and a friend of mine did a regular degree outside, studied 1 of 2 years in years in japan and later went again to write his thesis there and to then look for work there afterwards.

This way you can do start the longterm stay without needing any kind of official japanese certificate.

You however can and should start and aim for at least N2 optimally N1 if you plan to work in japan then. But this way you can work towards that goal while already studying there (in english)

If you want to be a regular student in Japanese courses i think you need at least a n2 certificate for enrollment some unis even an n1

  3. Not me but I knew someone who did this.

They had N1 and I think they were a bit beyond N1 overall.

This was for a grad degree in computer science. They were interviewed by some professor and they asked them various questions (obviously this was all in Japanese). Such as, how would you program this kind of application on this platform, and how would you solve this problem.

To help prep for this, this person had read several computer science books in Japanese. Basically you have to get the terminology down.

They told me one thing in their favor was that they added some diversity to the grad class, which overall was Japanese people.
