Best way to travel around in Tokyo

Flying into Narita on 25 Feb and planning to hang around Tokyo area and flying off from Haneda on 28 Feb. Staying in the Shinjuku area.

What would be the best and most efficient way for us to get around? We don’t have much of an itinerary except to travel around the Tokyo area to eat.

Buying a JR pass seems expensive and excessive. Is a Suica card sufficient?

  1. JR pass is usually not worth the cost unless you are using it to take a shinkansen. A Suica or Pasmo card will work just fine to get you on any bus or train in the Tokyo area.

  2. Suica or PASMO is a charge card that will allow you to just tap in and out of the station.

Other pass that might be worth it depend on your itinerary are: JR Tokunai Pass and Tokyo Subway 24/48/72 hour. But you got to calculate if it’s worth it for you.

  3. No, you don’t need a JR pass. You could get a 72-hour subway pass for 1500 yen. You get these at tourist centers or information centers inside certain subway stations, and you need to have your passport to buy them.

You should also get a Suica card and add funds to it. These work at train stations but also can be used at some restaurants or stores to make purchases and can come in handy for places that don’t take credit card.

  4. Within Tokyo there’s a mix of JR, private, Tokyo metro and Toei subway lines. I don’t think buying any pass is a good idea because it ties you to a single company. Just buy a Suica or Pasmo and use any line which is convenient for you. Within Tokyo it isn’t very expensive.
