What is your favorite day trip from Fukuoka?

Today’s question is: What is your favorite day trip from Fukuoka?

Fukuoka is a gateway to Kyushu – the biggest city, the place you have to transit through to get to the rest of the island. It’s home of the *yatai* and the place to spend your evenings in.

And there a lot of places you can go to from archeological parks telling the story of Jomon era to relics of Industrial revolution and World War II. Plenty of beaches and parks. Some onsen.

So tell us – what are the best day trips out of Fukuoka?

  1. A foursome of: Yoshinogari Koen, Dazaifu, Karatsu/Nagoya Castle, Mojiko/Yawata Steelworks would give one a good overview of history of Kyushu (pre-Yamato period, early Herian period, Sengoku/Edo period, Meiji restoration/industrial era respectively).

  2. I travel without a JR Pass, so my day trips tend to be much closer to the city.

**Nanzoin Temple** was very green with heaps of statues and things to look at, plus a walking trail. I think sumo wrestlers live there because they were doing some morning training exercises when I was there. I also saw a deer!

In **Kitakyushu** I didn’t really like the Mojiko area, it seemed a little too touristy (Mekari Shrine and the Kanmon tunnel are cool though), but I enjoyed the Kokura station area with the TOTO Toilet Museum and the castle park.

For sites further away: definitely **Yoshinogari Park**, I spent *hours* there and combined it with **Saga Castle**. A boat ride in **Yanagawa** was nice, and **Kumamoto city** was my favourite city in Kyushu. **Yutoku Inari shrine** was impressive and all around beautiful. **Shimabara** might require an early start to catch the ferry from Kumamoto, but it’s really interesting if you like volcanoes (the buried houses especially).
