Is there any way to send an international cashier’s check or money order from Japan?

Hi all – I am in the process of moving to Hawaii from Japan, with my wife and cat. Hawaii is very strict about bringing in pets, and while we’ve gotten all the documentation together, it has to be sent in advance. And to avoid delays, they want it sent with full payment. But for whatever reason, they’ll only accept money orders or cashier’s checks.

I’m actually kind of caught off guard by how borderline impossible it seems to be to acquire either of these things in Japan. My wife had no idea what either of them even are, and the only thing I’ve learned from Googling is that JP Post *used* to issue money orders, but, of course, [stopped](https://jp.usembassy.gov/message-to-u-s-citizens-japan-post-bank-to-stop-issuing-international-renewals-by-mail/) doing so right before COVID. The Embassy link says you’re basically SOL unless you’re on a base, which leaves me wondering how anyone living here is meant to follow the guidelines Hawaii has laid out. Western Union won’t do it, my wife is still checking with our banks but so far it sounds like none of them can do it either.

Am I missing something obvious here or is this basically just impossible to do from within Japan?

  1. Have you tried another pet transportation service. I would be kind of cautious about this company in that they only want money order or cashiers check and not accept credit card or make reasonable accomodation due to Japan not offering the prescribed banking method.

  2. Isn’t that rule something specific to the company you are trying to use? I just googled some website and saw this:

Personal checks are not accepted — you can pay in advance with a cashier’s check or money order (recommended for quicker release) or at the destination’s airport with cash, a traveler’s check or a VISA® or MasterCard®. These are individual prices per dog or cat, and you must pay in full before your pet can be released.

  3. don`t have you a family member you send the documents to and they can forward it from the US with the cashier`s check? that`s what I would do…..

unbelievable they don`t take credit cards…….everyone takes credit cards in the states…
