Hello! Incoming JET here arriving at the end of July with a spouse. My husband is big into bowling and has done it all of his life. He really wants to be able to bring his shoes, balls, equipment, etc. with him. However, we’re unsure of the best route for that. Bowling balls are moderately temperature sensitive as well. Should he take some as a carry-on? Just do airmail?
Thanks in advance!

Shipping bowling balls is going to be an expensive undertaking. And it raises the question of “why?”
While bowling certainly exists in Japan, it isn’t particularly popular. There are a few bowling alleys in each of the bigger cities, but… You’re coming as a JET, which means that it’s *very* likely that you will be out in the countryside. Bowling excursions are going to require a planned, probably somewhat lengthy trip. He won’t be able to just pop off to bowl a few frames in the evening.
Where are you coming from? I came from the US and shipped my heavy things with FedEx using great rates hotline. It’s upwards of 90% off. All you need is a FedEx account with a credit card on the account, call the hotline number (listed online if you google great rates hotline) and tell them the postal code it’s coming from and going to and the weight and dimensions. They’ll give you a price, you lock in the price for a specific date and drop it off at a FedEx location and bill it to your account. It’s pretty simple and the cheapest option. It might be only for packages coming from the US, idk, but it’s worth a try.
