Do we need to pay taxes for our side hustle? I am an international student.

I earn $10000 from my side hustle monthly and it’s only getting bigger. It’s been 4 months, will I need to pay taxes in the future?

Are the taxes tracked for PayPal?

  1. Yes, and a lot.
    Be prepared.

How much? That depends on how much you make in a year.
    Simple example:

$10000 / month or around 12Million yen per year.

    Insurance / Pension- ¥1,396,920
    Income Tax- ¥1,876,200
    Resident Tax- ¥1,022,300

It’s not 100% accurate, but it should be around that.

  2. You have to pay taxes for incomes, yes.

    >It’s been 4 months, will I need to pay taxes in the future?

You probably should pay retrospectively as well, for the time you’ve been in Japan.

    >Are the taxes tracked for PayPal?

Probably not. You’d have to report the income yourself, and pay the taxes.

Also you should have the permission to engage in activities outside your residence status, if you don’t have that already.

  3. Is the income Japan-sourced?

If not, AND it doesn’t get sent to Japan AND assuming you aren’t a permanent resident taxpayer (not the same as PR) then you don’t need to pay taxes in Japan on your side hustle. At least as far as I understand it.
