Book About Modern Japanese Mindset on WWII?

My dad just said that for Christmas he’d like a book about how modern Japanese people (really, any time post-WWII to present) have looked back on WWII. How they conceptualize the lead up to war, combat, and defeat. How Japanese people think about how they were thinking in the 1930’s and 40’s. I tried Googling but didn’t have much luck. Any recommendations? Thanks?

  1. *Embracing Defeat* by John Dower is the definitive book on the immediate post-war reckoning with the political and cultural implications of the war and the systems and ideologies that led up to it.
