NTT’s 10 Gigabit internet: worth it?

I am moving home and the next place is wired up for NTT’s fiber. Looking at the online checker, it seems like they provide up to 10Gbps (Flet’s Hikari Cross) at the location.

I am honestly tempted, since the price difference with 1Gbps doesn’t seem like much (could actually be less since I wouldn’t have to get Hikari Denwa for IPv6 Prefix Delegation from what I’ve heard).

Questions become:

– Is the speed attainable actually close to 10Gbps and significantly more than single gigabit?
– Can one get NTT to provide an SFP module instead of their router upon request? [NTT west seems to have an upgraded SFP+ module](https://www.ntt-west.co.jp/info/support/oshirase20190531.html), hope NTT East does too and it’s not just for businesses.
– Can one get the SFP ONU even with a collaboration provider? I am currently with IIJ (because they do IPoE via DS-Lite) and it would be cheaper to move my account instead of terminating and starting again with NTT + separate ISP.
– What kind of hardware does one need to route at 10Gbps (no fancy DPI or IDS, just a few firewall rules, IPv4 NAT, an IPoE tunnel and maybe a PPPoE session): am I still looking at something the size and price of a [TinyMiniMicro box](https://www.servethehome.com/introducing-project-tinyminimicro-home-lab-revolution/) or do I have to step up both in price and size/power consumption?

Right now I am using [this passively cooled system as my router](https://www.servethehome.com/topton-intel-n5095-4x-2-5gbe-firewall-review/) with OpnSense (should be perfect for 1Gbps) but even with link aggregation and a suitable switch I doubt it would be enough for 10.

  1. I don’t have 10Gbps, but I do have 2Gbps from Nuro.
    I was with Softbank Hikari 1Gbps and switching to 2Gbps didn’t have much impact on speed.
    Most servers can’t even handle 1Gbps properly.

    Right now I’m paying 5200 for 2Gbps.

  2. You should not use a PC for 10gb routing. You’d need an absolute beast to do this kind of routing in software.

    Your best bet is something like the mikrotik CCR2004 series.

  3. I’d also like to mention that most laptops don’t have a 10/100/1000/10000 gb lan port. Wi-fi, even over 5g, can only do so much. make sure your computer/laptop/tablet can handle those speeds to make sure 10gb is what you need.
