Importing Drugs

Hello folks!

I’m trying to find information regarding importing drugs. Without going into too much detail, they are not any of the controlled drugs like narcotics, antidepressants, etc. They are generally available in Japan, but in significantly smaller doses and cost a bloody fortune to buy here, since they aren’t really covered by insurance. I can get them from my old pharmacy back in Canada, in tablets that are 4x the strength (meaning I’d take 5 per day instead of 20), and for WAY cheaper. I would be able to drop my prescription refill from 50,000 JPY per 28 days to about 23,000 JPY, so it’s a huge difference.

I have a prescription from my doctor here in Japan, and he is supportive of my attempts to import the drugs.

The question I have is: how? I don’t want to import them one month at a time, since that is relatively expensive and opens the door for shipping issues to leave me without meds. I’d rather import 3-6 months at a time, but I know that I’ll have to get import permits with Customs. The problem is that whenever I search for importing drugs to Japan, I can only find results pertaining to bringing drugs with me when traveling **to** Japan; nothing for residents looking to fill prescriptions.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thank you in advance!

  1. People have reportedly imported things from osakadou and sorashido but I have no directly knowledge of either and am an untrusting soul.

For the difficulty – I mean as long as you have a prescription, they’re legal, and they’re not dangerous drugs that are dangerous I would guess they’d be okay to import?
