By mundane settings, I mostly mean “set in modern (let’s say 1980s forward?) Japan” and “no journeys through fantasy worlds initiated by means of truck.” The most I’ll put up with is a story set in world where ghosts (especially 怨霊) exist. Yes, リング and Another are on my list. But that’s besides the point. If you have other horror recs though, I’m all for it.
I’m up for stories about characters from all walks of life, though I might find it more relatable to read about someone in their 20s like me. I’m about 30 pages away from finishing コンビニ人間, and it’s been entertaining enough despite the main character being about 10 years older than me. Reading synopses of Sayaka Murata’s other works has my interest piqued and most if not all of them give me the impression they have what I’m looking for, so if all else fails, I’ll start there.
I don’t particularly care about difficulty, but it would be nice to become more exposed to N2 and N1 grammar.
Sorry this doesn’t have much to do with learning the language per se, but this seemed like the most active Japanese sub.

I’ve only read them translated but Mieko Kawakami’s books are pretty good even in English I think
