What is the best order to learn vocabulary for reading?

JLPT order? Grade Level? Core 2k/6k? What is the best way and order to learn vocabulary to get started reading as soon as possible?

  1. Learning random vocabulary gets boring fast. Find what you want to read, then learn the vocabulary for it.

  2. I usually say grab a textbook. Most of it’s applicable to your daily life right away.

  3. Do Core2k (or any similar frequency-ordered deck) for the foundation, then add words you find in your reading material.

  4. it really doesn’t matter all that much, better to just get started and fill in with what you need as you go. every media and genre will have different special vocab you’ll need to learn anyways. hyperoptimizing up front is far less important than constant reassessment of your current needs and adjusting as you go. also don’t just learn vocab, you need grammar and context-appropriate usage practice.

  5. Just start reading and make lists of words you don’t know. This way, you’ll learn the most common words you need to learn fairly quickly, as they keep coming up again and again. It’s not easy at the start, but you’ll get there!
