How to use house’s LAN outlets?

Hello, I have just moved into a house with LAN sockets (CAT5E) in every room and I would like to understand what I need to do in order to be able to connect to the Internet simply by connecting my Ethernet cable from my computer to the LAN socket of the house.

I tried the following 2, but couldn’t get it to work:

– Connect the NTT Hikari modem directly to one of the LAN sockets in the house, then from another room connect my computer to the LAN in the house and try to connect to the Internet.

– Connect the NTT Hikari modem to my Wifi router (NEC WG2600HP4), then connect the router to the home LAN socket, then from another room, connect my computer to the home LAN and try to connect to the Internet.

Any help or suggestion will be greatly appreciated 🙏

  1. Is the cable connected? Are there activities light on your PC/Router when you plugged the cable in?

There need to be a hub/switch binding all the cables together. It probably don’t come with the house so you will have to locate where all the cables from the wall terminated and install the hub/switch there.

  2. You need to find out where the cables connect to. Look for a box or closet that all the cables from all over the house run into. You need a switch (or your router) in that box to connect the cables. Right now the sockets are not actually connected to anything.

  3. see if you have central network access panel somewhere in your home, typically in a closet near your entrance way. Find the panel, and connect your Wi-Fi router to access panel IN port assuming your Wi-Fi also has wired Ethernet ports. Connect The router IN port to your Hikari modem OUT port and modem IN port to a NTT port on the wall most probably somewhere nearby the access panel.

Can you access internet through Wi-Fi, if yes, you have internet access through Wi-Fi router. Connect your computer to a lan port and check if you get an IP address assigned and access internet.
