I made a concept App to practice writing Kanji using AI

Hey everyone!
I’m a Japanese learner since around 4 years and by far the biggest problem for me is reading/writing because of limited kanji knowledge.

To practise writing I made a proof of concept app (not yet publicly available) to test your ability to spell/write out kanji. It is basically a typing challenge game where you can generate a story based on any topic you choose and then try to write out the story with minimal mistakes. Every (unique?) story is generated by ChatGPT and you have the possibility to change difficulty (JLPT grade), length and topic of the story.

If the admins allow it I would like to share a Screenshot of what I have so far to visualize the concept and if there is interest in this I might make a publicly testable version.

  1. Holy crap, two ChatGPT posts in 20 minutes.

To be fair, this is a slightly better use than the usual one i.e. ChatGPT as a learning assistant (who consistently has no clue what they’re talking about)

There’s still a lot of problems with this concept.

First, the AI has a tendency to write stiff content with some occasional mistakes.

Second, I’m not sure how this will help kanji writing skills. If the story is already written for you, is the point to choose kanji from a list? Because that’s going to come back to bite you when it’s time to write kanji by hand. Writing kanji in real life isn’t always just choosing from a list. Knowing how to handwrite them is an actually useful skill, and anecdotally speaking, is a good aid to memory (it adds a kinesthetic level on top of the visual one).

    >Well the JLPT doesn’t require you to hand-write kanji.

The JLPT is just one measure and only really measures reading and listening skills, and even then is multiple choice. It’s helpful as a vague outline, but isn’t definitive proof of Japanese ability, and shouldn’t be considered a goal in and of itself.
