Hi guys! I’ve been interested in moving to Japan for quite some time now, I studied Japanese (aiming for N2 next year!) and I am also interested in the country, but only recently have I looked into the visa requirements and I’ve been extremely anxious when I found out my degree has to match the career I would like to pursue while I’m on said visa.
I’ve been working in game development for roughly 2 years now and I intend to continue working in the industry for a long time. I have a bachelors in Physics which is why finding out about the visa requirements made me very concerned since, from what I understand, companies would be less willing to help obtain the visa for someone in my situation.
With that said I am still hopeful since from what I understand middle and senior developers are in demand all over the place. My degree somewhat covers what technically is taught for Computer Science students – basics of programming and obviously mathematics, so I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s not a fitting degree for a game developer.
Has anybody been in a similar spot when coming to Japan? I’d love to hear you’re experience.

This is only true for folks looking for a visa with something less than a bachelor’s degree. With a bachelor’s degree or better it doesn’t actually matter what you studied.
