I’m looking to go to Japan in August. The Obon festival looks fun, but I’m concerned it’s going to make travel a hassle. Has anyone been? What traveling a problem? Should I move my travel date to avoid?
It will be very hot in August, and it is also typhoon season. Most Japanese festivals/holidays increase domestic travel and make it hard to reserve trains, hotels, etc.
All of Japan is basically off during that period and everyone is traveling to be with their families and what not.
Think of traveling in the US at Christmas or any other major holiday, and it’s the same here. Travel isn’t impossible, just a lot more crowded. If you’re arriving before and departing after the Obon holiday, travel should be relatively easy. If you want to fly here during the middle of their holiday, expect higher fares, crowds and wait times.
Otherwise, traveling shouldn’t be too big of a problem, just might take you longer to get to where you’re going, that’s all.
