By the way is it okay to watch/listen to things you can’t really understand or is it bad?

You won’t be learning nearly as much as if you spent that time learning new grammar and vocabulary. Engaging with real-world Japanese is important, but doing so becomes more useful later when you have a base of knowledge you can put into practice.

  2. Find a way to keep motivated. Track your gains and set defined goals. It will be a long time before you can just open a book and ‘read’ or just put on a show and understand what is happening (even just Japanese subs).

Also, Hazzat said above, but I could NOT perceive Japanese sounds when I first started. It all was mush and just listening to the sounds helped me tune in. No subs, since I could already read them. If you can parse sounds out properly then you should be able to just type up the words you hear and get the meanings while the program plays. I do this often actually.
