I just paid 23000 yen for a plumber to check a leaking toilet. I was told the toilet needed to be taken off its base first and that was the initial cost.
The plumber said there must be a clog far down in the pipe and that would be 60,000 yen for a high pressure cleaning. He showed a video of water coming up from the uncovered drainage hole.
I told my wife not to agree after doing a Google search and seeing the company had only 2 stars with a few bad reviews.
The plumber was very professional, but he showed up in a very nice black sedan, had gold rimmed designer glasses, a very nice watch and fashionable hair cut. He looked more like a salesperson than a plumber. I was expecting a small work truck with an ogisan and she simple blue uniform.
Anyway after he we the toilet still off its base (I didn’t want him to charge more to put it back), I filled a bucket with water and poured them down the pipe he showed in the video was clogged. The water went straight down the pipe and didn’t come up at all.
I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but I think he may have been adding to the problem because he was just dealing with my wife.
Does anyone else have any experiences with plumbers in Japan?

It sounds weird how they would not be wearing waterproof safety gear before they begin any work. Plumbing is a hazardous job where you should regularly be confronting hazardous materials and chemicals spilling to your clothing. Also safety helmets, how do you have nice hair while wearing safety helmets?
Yeah this seems very sketchy…
