Tested Positive the Day Before Flight

To the person who posted asking what would happen if they got covid before they left, well it happened to me.

The positive result took me completely aback because I had been experiencing no symptoms, I’m triple vaxxed, and I already had covid in January this year to boot.

I was supposed to fly out on Sunday May 15th with the other Early Arrival JETs from Sydney and I got tested at midday on Saturday. When I got my result Saturday night I tried to call the consulate, but of course they’re closed over the weekend so I called the travel agent who cancelled my ticket. The travel agent mentioned I might have to wait to leave with the next group.

I got my confirmation from the consulate this week while I was isolating, I’ll be leaving with the main departure group in August.

Obviously, I’m very lucky to have another group to leave with but I am extremely nervous about getting covid again before the next flight. I don’t know what would happen if I test positive again, but it’s possible I would have to wait for the next departure in May.

Most of all throughout this I have felt so much sympathy for the 2020 JETs. Having the rug pulled out the day before I was due to fly was absolutely brutal, hopefully you all have better luck with your flights!

  1. My nightmare came true for you. So sorry to hear. Have any symptoms yet? Do you notice any difference after your booster?

  2. Depending on how important this is to you, you might want to mask up until departure. If you happen to catch Covid a third time, I don’t think there will be another “other group” for you to fall back on. Stay safe and don’t let it slip away.

  3. Darn OP, I hope you’re doing alright! I asked the question about getting covid 90 days before departure, and I wasnt expecting that many stories but getting it day before departure really is something else. Thank you for sharing, this sheds some light on what the process could be like.

I guess being paranoid around people doesnt make much of a difference, sounds like it happens even to the safest and most careful of us. So I guess masking up, decreasing contact and hoping for the best is all I can do. Fingers crossed we both get to leave with the end July/August departure group!
