Iya Valley (Tokushima) without a car

Hi all,

I am planning a trip accross Shikoku and I wanted to check on the Iya Valley (Oboke Gorge, vine bridges etc). However, I don’t have a license here and I was wondering if it was doable at all without a car, seeing buses are not so frequent.

Also, if possible, I would like to walk a bit around the area, so maybe I can kill two birds with a stone and do some parts while hiking? I see distances are not crazy, but not sure if it’s just the main road and it would be dangerous.

Any suggestions are welcome, many thanks in advance!

  1. You can do it with bus with careful planning (really careful planning). The taxi between Oboke station and the sightseeing boat pier is like 800yen so don’t be afraid to use that if needed.

Or just take a sightseeing bus. More expensive but much easier: [https://yonkoh.co.jp/teikan](https://yonkoh.co.jp/teikan)

  2. May be you can go with friends or a person who can drive. Because you see more places with the car instead of going with the bus.

  3. There are some private taxi hire operating in Shikoku for day trip if it helps. I did iya valley pre pandemic times, the private driver picked us up from oboke station and brought us to oboke gorge, vine bridges etc and wait for us while we spent time exploring. Public transport are not too frequent in Shikoku unfortunately. Walking can be challenging as the roads can be narrow and hilly
