japanese learning app recommendations.

As the title suggest, I need some help finding japanese learning apps. I have used doulingo but it didn’t work for me so please, any suggestions will be helpful.

  1. If you don’t know hiragana and katakana, these won’t be helpful YET. I took a few classes in university before I started using apps. My favorites are wanikanj (kanji app) and bunpro (grammar app). I forget the name of the program that they use but essentially the words or grammar points that you mess up the most will appear the most. Both offer a generous trial imo but they are paid subscriptions.

Anki (free) is great for vocab. There are pre-built decks available but I find I do better when I input the material myself. It’s basically an online flashcard builder. You can also try quizlet if you want to play games while you study.

  2. My suggestions:

    – To learn hiragana and katakana I used an app called [Learn Japanese!](https://apps.apple.com/es/app/learn-japanese/id1014955564) I hardly see it in this reddit but it really helped me for not only learning hiragana and katakana but also know how to write them properly. Is one off payment. You need to start with this before anything else

    – Wani Kani. is not an App (is a webpage) and subscription model but by far the best I have tried. Space Repetition Method. SRS. I really feel progress with it, learned 150 kanji so far in few months and continuing.

    – Anki . The app for Android is free, for IOs is too expensive but you can always access via webpage. Anki is flashcard in general, it won’t teach anything by itself, depends on the deck you use.

    – Bunpro (not bunpo). Again, this is mostly a webpage and has subscription model. Uses SRS like Wani Kani but instead of learning Kanji focuses on grammar. I am thinking to give it a more serious try because SRS is really working for me as it forces me to continusly check my reviews ( I would hardly study otherwise)

  3. I use wanikani to learn kanji, but it is subscription based. It isnt *technically* an app, but third party developers have made app versions of it that work perfectly fine. I use the app Tsurukame to do my wanikani reviews.
Also, i use bunpro. It is subscription based but they also have third party developers that have made app versions. You would have to download test flight then bunpro for that though.

If you are looking for things that are free, I would suggest going to tofugu.com and searching “free apps.” They provide huge lists of recommendations, and explain what each one does pretty well.

  4. I was using Duolingo too but now I’m using Renshuu. It’s pretty good, flashcard based learning.
