When to ask job about Dependent Visa?

I just started applying to some Japanese jobs (overseas)
I have a spouse (wife) and have researched the Dependent Visa already, but I don’t know when would be the best time to bring that up to a potential employer.

Would this be an acceptable thing to bring up after the interview in “any additional questions?”
Would it hurt my chances at being hired to ask if they can provide any assistance or guidance on that front and should we just handle all of that ourselves?

  1. I suppose it depends. If your employer refuses to provide assistance and makes you handle it on your own, would that be a deal breaker for you? If so you’d definitely not want to wait to find out that you’ve been wasting your time.

In any respect I would not think asking about the level of relocation support they’d provide is something taboo or out of bounds.

  2. Given that you only need an employment certificate from your employer, everything else you can do by yourself, I don’t see why you can’t bring it up as soon as possible.

  3. I brought it up once they indicated they would offer me the job. I consider the interview being about the job, and the dependent visa is more part of the “negotiations.”

For me it was basically a dealbreaker. I have a spouse and kid and I wasn’t going to wait around and go through the application process myself. Either all of us or none of us.

ETA: absolutely not in the cover letter. That is about job fit. Also, I never had to put down my marital status anywhere.
