Paywave in Japan

Someone is visiting from Australia and wonder if Paywave is usable anywhere. I know of no places/ATM with paywave, but you can certainly get Paywave cards in Japan (for use overseas). So maybe there are some infrequent ATMs that can use paywave hidden away somewhere?

  1. Paywave is the same as EMV payment, right? Many shops with newer POS can accept EMV payment. You might need to tell them タッチで.

  2. PayWave is available at most major convenience stores, McDonald’s, and is becoming increasingly available at stores in the big cities particularly in Greater Tokyo. It goes by the name タッチ決済 (touch kessai) and that three wave symbol, though the cashier’s knowledge of the service is spotty.

No ATMs I’ve seen support it but I feel at an ATM it’s not such a big deal to just insert your card. International cards used to also be a big deal but I think the big three convenience stores let you withdraw money from them now.

  3. My Australian Visa paywave card works at some places, but it’s hit and miss. You definitely shouldn’t rely on it.

Fine for konbini, big supermarkets, major chains etc. Not many restaurants or izakaya though.
