Why is the NHK not considered a bōryokudan (暴力団)?

They seem to fit the bill insofar as their enforcers are basically gangsters involved in a Mafia-like criminal organization, regularly engaging in an array of shakedown activities such that many Japanese citizens and residents remain fearful of the threat they pose to their safety.

  1. I know someone that borrowed money from organized crime and they went so far to say if they didn’t pay back, they would trash their place of business and home. NHK hasn’t gone to that extreme…..yet.

  2. For the first time in my 7 years in Japan I decided to live in “Mansion”, where we have a dedicated entrance and camera for when someone rings the bell.

This is extremely helpful. I always note if I ordered smth or if Im expecting something by post (that requires me to open the door), so whenever someone comes who looks suspicious (because sometimes they lie and say they’re an amazon delivery driver!) I just put down the interphone lol
    Nothing they can do

Also the landlord himself said to just put up the NHK stickers on the postbox, so if they see it, they wont ring the bell

    Landlord is Japanese.

  3. I think aggressiveness definitely differs, I’ve personally not had much issue with them. The guy in my area who is their contract is this retired dude who just leaves a pamphlet in the mailbox once in a while. He’s not very motivated to force people I think he just wants an excuse to walk around the neighbourhood lmao.

  4. I don’t know but I don’t know why they can’t just block the channel for people who don’t pay and have you have to sign up and pay to get the channel. Like literally every other cable/satellite channel in the world works. You pay for the channels you want

  5. I wish the government would just add it to national tax and put an end to all the bullshit surrounding the NHK payments. And hopefully it would also put an end to all the “nihongo tabemasen why do I have to pay tax for something I dont use” cringe posts.

  6. No. NHK got greedy. They had so much money they bought up hotels, cruise ships, and expensive properties all over the world. Don’t give anything to them.
