Let’s say you go fora medical procedure of some kind. 70% of it is covered and you have to pay the remaining 30%, right? What if you can’t fork over the entire 30%?
That happens to my husband at his dental clinic sometimes. He’s usually willing to work out an alternative payment agreement with patients who can’t pay their copayment at the time of treatment.
Many years ago I was able to pay for a week long stay in the hospital in several installments.
If I am not mistaken the default is either you fill a form to request a delay (up to 6 month)
Or you can make a request to pay in multiple installements.
You should apply for a “high cost medical expense benefit” certificate before your procedure. This will cap your copay to a certain maximum based on your income. Good place to start
You can get private insurance to cover this 30%. A friend I know who works in a low-paying job actually *made* money from his hospital stay thanks to his insurance. He was getting paid 10,000 per day in hospital but using a shared-room, so came out on top.
I had a medical situation which required me to be put on life support for 2 weeks, kept in ICU for over 2 months, and in a private room for another month or so.
While there, the hospital worked out the high cost medical form, mentioned by another person, with my wife, which capped expenses we were liable for to a % of our income, and set up a no-interest repayment plan with us once I started to get better.
