Dumb question about JAL’s various economy classes

Sorry for this dumb question. I tried going through their website trying to understand what exactly is the difference between their various Economy seats.

I see a big cost difference, almost 10K worth of difference.

What’s this Economy Saver, Economy Standard, Economy semi-flex etc.?

From what I could understand, economy saver means I cannot change my flight details later on and if I do, I will be heavily charged.

And is there any restriction on checked in luggage as well based on these economy classes?

Their “economy” class allows 2 bags to be checked in (23 KG each). If I go for Economy saver, will I have any restrictions on baggage? or these allowances still work?

And I compared the rates of flights on Expedia and booking directly by JAL’s website. JAL has cheap prices. Why is that? Is that common?

  1. JAL doesn’t have a “basic economy” where you don’t get cabin baggage. So all of those economy subclasses have the same baggage allowance.

The differences in those subclasses are usually meaningless: fully flexible means you can change without fees, but costs so much you might as well just buy a new ticket. Semi-flex reduces the change fee, but still ridiculous, etc. There’s also a difference in the minimum time between flights.

The only time you’d ever not get the cheapest economy fare available is if you’re chasing FLYON points or one world status. Economy Standard can give double the points compared to Saver.

  2. This site might help regarding Saver / Standard / Semi-Flex.

As for baggage allowance, no restriction on luggage. Economy and Premium Economy is same allowance of 23kg x 2.

Always book direct with carrier. Never with third party.

    Hope this helps.
