When I uploaded a YouTube short video as a listening quiz “Which do you hear, Byouin びょういん/病院 or Biyouin びよういん/美容院? “, some of my friends, who are learning Japanese seriously and who I think their Japanese are pretty good, told me that they couldn’t get it.
Also one of my subscribers commented on the short video and she was like non-native people don’t understand palatalization.
I learned that there is the word palatalization there.
Even in Japanese, I hadn’t heard of and seen the word though lol
Anyway I made a video where I described how to pronounce the confusing word pair Byouin and Biyouin, so I’ll share it with you on here, but I can’t tell if it works for you because I can’t get what palatalization is and why it prevents some of you from pronouncing or hearing the two words.
So if you have any thoughts about those kinds of things, could you tell me about them?
