so, i’m a beginner-intermediate learner, and recently i recently worked up the nerve to start talking to native speakers and start working on putting what i’ve studied up till now (high n4 level) to use. to find conversation partners i downloaded the language exchange app hellotalk.
after using it for a while, though, i noticed most conversations, including with people who reached out to me first, always fizzled out relatively quick after personal introductions and some brief small talk about hobbies or whatever. i totally get that not everyone meshes with everyone they meet, and that other people are totally allowed to not be interested in talking to me, but it feels like i could be getting way better practice with someone i could build an actual relationship with where we could tell each other about our days, or even just a more unique one-off conversation. it’s to the point where i’m able to engage pretty comfortably in text-based small talk, and i need more complex conversation to challenge me.
i’d also like to add that i wasn’t being selfish or anything, i always my partners asked if they would like to speak english, and told them that if they had any questions about english they could ask me, it just seemed nobody was interested in having a proper conversation.
does anyone know any other way to meet proficient/advanced native speakers that might be interested in talking and able to put up with a relatively low level of japanese ability?

You can pay for lessons or conversation practice for around 10 usd / hr at italki.com. I personally have taken over 10 lessons (each 1 hr) and i think it’s pretty good.
I agree Italki is good.
