I’ve heard a lot of criticisms of Anki’s default settings and I see many people have their own differently tuned settings- which makes it a headache for me to see what to change or not, when this person has these settings whereas this person has these settings etc.
Is Anki without any add-ons & default settings (apart from increasing maximum review to 9999) good, or am I shooting myself in the foot? Is there really anything I need to adjust?

I’m on my third year of daily Anki and have not adjusted any settings (aside from the 9999 reviews). Also, I’ve heard of long term users regretting screwing with the intervals in the long run 🤷♂️ Even Migaku’s suggested changes I declined. In my experience the defaults are perfectly fine.
There are a lot of opinions on this topic so YMMV. I’d recommend reading into Low Key Anki https://web.archive.org/web/20210203165239/https://massimmersionapproach.com/table-of-contents/anki/low-key-anki/intro/ and for the settings https://refold.la/roadmap/stage-1/a/anki-setup#Recommended-Options-Settings
I think Ankis default settings are kinda bad and you’re probably best served picking something that someone else figured out if you don’t want to bother tweaking settings yourself.
What settings you’ll use in the end is obviously up to you.
I have been using default settings for a year or something but recently I added one extra step in my “learning steps” to improve my retention rate.
