A very “powerful” goshuincho and goshuin from Kenkun Jinja in Kyoto, where the warlord Oda Nobunaga is enshrined.

1. This is a goshuincho (shrine visit seal book) from Kenkun Shrine in Kyoto. Embossed on the front cover is Oda Nobunaga’s personal motto, “Tenka Fubu” (天下布武) – “Unify all under the heavens (i.e. Japan) with military might”, alongside the Oda clan *mon* (family crest), and in the center of the back cover is his signature.

   The goshuin itself contains “Tenka Fubu” again within the red seal surrounded by two dragons, to the right is Nobunaga’s signature, and on the left the date is handwritten by the shrine priest (kannushi).

   The kannushi was extremely friendly and excited to explain the meaning of the seal and book as he wrote it, and was more than happy to let me take his picture as he wrote the calligraphy. It’s a beautiful shrine too, atop a small mountain where you have to climb many steps to reach it.
