I met many Americans on the Internet who were interested in Japanese media and were trying to learn Japanese.
I was happy, but they seemed to be learning Japanese by piracy on the internet.
when i talk about this
“We Americans don’t often learn minor languages like Japanese, but we do have a knack for finding good anime. You should appreciate the fact that Americans are learning Japanese.” they said
I was frustrated and studied English hard to get revenge on them. Right now, I’m watching Harry Potter and Family Guy for free on Internet piracy sites. I can easily understand them.
As you can see from these facts, I think that entertainment has a strong influence on language learning motivation.

Family Guy is my favourite anime too OP
mmm. Okay, I guess
> ‘minor languages like Japanese’
Sounds like /r/ShitAmericansSay/
Sounds like a weird hill to die on, but whatever motivates you I guess.
On a side note, I don’t think a lot of people in Japan learns English for entertainment, if at all. More like better scores on 入試 and TOEIC for higher income and social hierarchy.
Meanwhile I scratch my head trying to figure out where the joke is in stuff like [this](https://youtu.be/s6UzwhXs6zE). Definitely an outlier in terms of English learning motivation in Japan.
Either irony or trolling? You are frustrated people pirate to learn a language, so you pirate to learn a language? In this day and age its easy to buy legitimate anime or stream it – I am a big fan of physical media because it won’t up and disappear on you. If you like things like Family Guy, just import a set – a bunch of used sets are super cheap. Though DVD regions matter unless you get a dedicated R1 player (assuming you are Japanese).
Weird post.
North America is probably the largest _paying_ market for anime outside of Japan. Also, Japan probably has the largest number of pirates of Japanese content, since…the content is targeted primarily at Japanese. It might seem like there are a lot of pirates of it elsewhere, but you’re talking about pirates of foreign content. This is like a niche of a niche. You appear to have allowed boastful teenagers to damage your calm. On the plus side, you’ve been able to channel revenge into something educational!
There’s far more native English-speaking media accessible worldwide in comparison to Japanese media, and you can only progress so far only reading textbooks. So unless we move to Japan, media is one of our only options to immerse ourselves in naturally spoken Japanese.
Often, the books, anime, and other content that is appropriate to to our Japanese ability is out of print or extremely expensive. Other times, even if we wanted to purchase said content, Japanese platforms won’t sell to foreigners. So, yes, while those types of people exist who pirate anything and everything, there’s often no other choice for Japanese learners.
