Hello everyone! I am an American who just moved to Japan. I move into my home this Friday, and was wondering what’s the best internet provider to go with in your opinion? Looking forward to your inputs. Thank you!
The provider you pick depends on what infrastructure you already have and/or what’s available in the area. If you prefer “English service” asahi-net works fine.
OCN, or any other ISP these days are pretty much equal as long as you get domestic router supporting ipv6 stuff. For more info, again, see the wiki.
Well, you need to check with the owner which internet is already installed in the building, you can’t just have whatever you want installed… If the owner OKs it, and if you are willing to front all the payment, plus the fees of removing the internet when moving out, then you can put in whatever you want. But without knowing which city / area you moved into, nobody can provide more info…
To me, docomo hikari and OCN works perfectly. In particular, OCN is a MAP-E type VNE for Ipv4 traffic over ipv6 which is crucial if you want to access your home local network externally via Ipv4. A person did a write up on how to configure MAP-E for custom non-crappy Japanese routers which is worth reading.
