Google Pay

Hi all, I’m relatively new here in Japan.
In Europe I’ve been using Google Pay / Wallet to pay for things with my android phone. I haven’t seen the logo in shops or restaurants since I’ve come here.

Is it accepted?
Or what apps do you all use when paying with your phone?

I’ve seen mention of Line Pay and PayPay but not really sure if these are safe.

Oh, and is it possible to pay for trains with my phone?
Or do I have to use a Pasmo card?

Thanks all

  1. If you have a foreign android phone you’re basically SOL except for places that accept visa paywave.

  2. I top up my NFC Suica with my Japanese credit card all the time, through Google Pay. If you can, go open a checking account with SMBC bank, and there is a solid chance they will offer you a visa credit card (with a small credit line, mine started at 100,000 yen). That’ll work just fine while you build credit history and can open higher limit cards. Now I use Amazon Mastercard, which means I earn Amazon points just for riding the train 🙂

  3. PayPay is a hassle to set up but once I finally got it done it’s been a very convenient way to pay for things. I also use ApplePay through the ID system.

  4. Wherever you see the Visa paywave sign(the sideways wifi looking icon), you should be able to use any Android phone with Google Pay to pay (I’ve been using my international Samsung phone with no issues so far).

You might not see it everywhere, but for stuff like convenience stores or supermarkets I’ve had no issue so far. Usually the PoS has contactless mode enabled if asking to pay via credit card, so I just tap my phone to it and it works. Asking for “VISA Touch” might help if there’s any confusion with the store clerk regarding the phone.

  5. i use LinePay iD and linked it to my Google Pay, works flawlessly at stores that accept iD (711, Aeon, Uniqlo, MrMax, etc) which also currently has a 2% point system

if not, then can always pay using the LinePay QR Code but only 0.5% points

wanted to use PayPay, but i am having issues to link my JP bank account because of katakana-romaji shit

also use Mobile Suica on my phone via NFC, works like a charm in most places I’ve been

you can even topup at some machines
