Is this an error or one of those preference kind of this?

I was reading a novel and it said” 刃紋” but I can’t find any dictionary having this but it has”刃文” a real word、so is this a personal thing since the characters have similar meanings and are similiar in appearance too, or an error?

  1. [Wikipedia](https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%88%83%E6%96%87)

    >刃文(はもん)は日本刀の見どころのひとつで、刀身に見ることができる波模様のことを言う。波紋や刃紋などの表記も見られるが、日本刀の専門家や専門書でこれらの表記が用いられることはなく誤記である。

Yes, it’s an error. (Or maybe the author made up it as their original term.)

  2. 刃文 is the correct term in the nihonto community right now, but there has been times it’s been written as 波紋 or 刃紋 where I think people heard of the term はもん without actually researching or seeing the kanji.
