Ending my final and 5th year on JET, I wish I could stay longer here but it’s not possible. I’ve been in the 就職 process, but I really don’t want to quit my job early and switch in April, but I’m worried there won’t be any transitioning if I complete my year and stay until summer 2023
Eikaiwa companies tend to hire throughout the year. ALT positions tend to focus a lot of the hiring either around now (for an April start) or around May for a September start.
While I understand your desire to not leave your school, if a positive opportunity presents itself it would be prudent to take it — even if that means leaving. Some schools maythink this is shitty of you, but they are also not promising to keep you (and in fact have probably made clear that they can’t). Ultimately you need to do what is best for you — and since lots of direct hire jobs in particular start in April, that may mean leaving before your contract is up.
Some companies do hire mid year. International schools (if you have the credentials) frequently start their school year in august. The private school I work for usually brings on a few staff in September (or other times) depending on need, but typically to fill in the holes that get left when someone has a family emergency and leaves mid-year. (In my 6 years here it’s happened once or twice every year
You shouldn’t hesitate to break your contract if the right job comes up. You’re in your fifth year. They will not extend your contract again. Everyone here knows the hiring season is mainly April. Depending on who you work with, they might act like it’s the end of the world – but it truly isn’t. Don’t let them guilt you into making a decision that will ultimately affect your life negatively.
I really recommend keeping an eye on the jalt listings as of now, signing up for something like etas-net, because from now private schools start listing positions. Most uni level stuff have already stopped positing positions, but private schools begin around now.
You owe your BOE nothing. If you mattered that much to them, you’d have a longer contract. I had an extraordinarily good relationship with mine, but facts are facts: You are replaceable, you are not integral to the running of the school(s). You have to look out for yourself and do what’s best for your future.
Need more information. Have you done any professional development in these 5 years as an ALT or just goofed around?
There are job postings throughout the year. Some people quit the company mid-year for whatever reason. We have two openings right now, we are trying to hire before the end of the year.
Whatever you do avoid the Aeon cult, that maniac Lars Frank is like a modern day Jim Jones telling you it’s not poison
Where I work generally hires to start in February or September, but they have brought people on in-between depending on hiring needs.
Ed: It’s not an ALT position.
