I’ll be moving to a Japanese university this summer as a research student. Everyone keeps telling me to go for MEXT when the deadline was over a year ago, and at that time the Japanese government’s policies left a lot of uncertainty about whether I’d be able to go. I’ve looked up guides for scholarships from my own university, from the university I’m going to, and JSPS but they all seem to be for non-research students or masters-only students. Any advice for funding student activities this late into the application process?

By “Research Student” you mean a non-degree program? If so, your options are ***super*** limited, if they exist at all. There aren’t a lot of scholarships available for foreign students in general. Take the degree out of the equation and those options basically vanish.
If you’ve looked at the scholarship options from both your home university and and your host university you have pretty much covered everything that’s available. I would, however, suggest actually *talking* to someone at the universities rather than just reading guides. They might be able to track down something you missed.
