Re-learning Japanese

Hi!

I’m actually a graduate of japanese philology, but during the years between graduation and now, I had little opportunity to use my skills. Now I find that I have forgotten SO MUCH. It feels like a sad waste to just let it all go, so I’ve been thinking about ways to re-learn, remember, etc. I can’t really afford a language course, and starting from scratch is also pointless in my case, so I’ve been wondering if anyone has any suggestions for good ways to re-learn on your own. Do you know of any good podcasts or other ways to remember forgotten language skills?

Thanks!

  1. I learned Japanese during university and then had little chance to use it, so I lost a lot of proficiency for several years. I found that simply watching Japanese shows with Japanese subtitles/reading the news really helped refresh the language. There’s also some “getting into Japanese literature” textbooks easy to find online that will give you both the Japanese and English version of short stories, for instance. These are all things I used and I could often see a word or sentence and it would click in my brain as something I used to know.

I would also recommend trying to write a bit everyday in Japanese, and if possible finding a speaking partner. If that is not an option, reading out loud is a good way of making sure your spoken ability doesn’t fully go away.
