iPhone language difficulty?

Doing the redundant practice of switching my phone language to Japanese. How difficult would you say it is to understand the various menus for someone learning the language? What grade level would you best compare it to?

  1. Having done this in the past, I’d say it’s about an 8th grade level. It doesn’t use many kanji from beyond the 6th grade standard list, but obviously there’s no furigana, and while you might know the kanji themselves, some of the compounds and vocabulary are not words an elementary schooler would know.

  2. I am currently doing this. The grammar used is rather simple, it is not difficult to grasp the meaning of sentences. Menus shouldn’t be difficult to understand after you learned the commonly used vocabulary. One problem I have is that the Apps on my phone also switched to Japanese, even stuff like Maps or Safari (even my google search gives out Japanese results). So if for example you want to use your phone as a navigation system, be prepared to get Japanese instructions! This happened to me on a holiday trip with my family, the navigation commands weren’t all that useful to the driver…
