Question about Tax Certificates for Visa Extensions

Good afternoon, friends.
Just a question about the tax certificate (nozei shomei sho) you can get from your local ward office.

I came to Japan last April under a 1 year visa and am in need of applying for an extension now. That would entail providing this certificate according to most sources (it’s a bit of a mess of conflicting information out there).

But as far as I’m aware this would likely just be a “0 yen paid” at this stage. I don’t believe my employer has been paying quarterly and he said he’s doing all the business taxes next month (March). I also didn’t receive any letters about residence taxes last June (presumably due to only being here a couple months) and likewise don’t expect to be invoiced until June this year. So ultimately haven’t paid any tax outside of the standard Goods & Services thus far.

That doesn’t sound like it’d be a good indicator of being a good samaritan. Anyone else come under just a 1 year visa and renewed? What was your experience? Do you actually need this document?

    My first visa in Japan was also a 1 year. And when renewing it, I didn’t have to give them any of my tax document. I only needed to give them my employer’s documents.

  2. Call immigration.

    I had a similar situation, and they wanted my work details and a letter explaining my situation. But I’m on a spouse visa, it’s a different story.
