Is anyone else taking Kumon Japanese? I’m in Japan.

Hello,

I am lucky enough to live in Japan and have had some experience learning Japanese. I am taking the Kumon Japanese Language Program via distance education because I work odd hours so going to the classroom could be difficult. I’m glad they offer Japanese instruction here and was told it was a great program.

So, I just took my diagnostic test yesterday (it was a true test of my skills, and I am not confident at all about where I’ll be placed LOL. I mailed it off today. About how long does it take to get your results back and your first set of learning materials? How do the oral lessons work? Is it just reading or do you practice your conversation as well?

Thank you!

  1. I didn’t do it myself but I had a friend doing it. It was beginner/medium level, there a lot of repetition (that’s what one needs to learn langage ! ) and he told me it was very efficient if you do your exercise everyday. It was only writing and I don`t know if they offer something else.

  2. I did it for about 3 months and quit because it was progressing to slow. It doesn’t mean it is bad. In fact, I learned how to write hiragana, katakana and a few kanjis and 4 years after quitting, without any practice, I still remember how to write most of them.

I was also living in Japan and that was the reason I quit. I had a real necessity for learning Japanese as fast as possible to handle living here by myself (I came alone to Japan), and 3 months I could only write and a few basic grammars? It was too slow for me.

If you have the time and budged go for it, but most students I saw at the Kumon center who were taking the Japanese course were mostly kids of foreigners. I.e. they have less pressure to learn the language quickly.
