Worried for my residence tax

I came to Japan in august 2021 to Toyama. Moved to Gifu when my contract was up in March 2022 and stayed until I moved again due to job reasons in November.

My visa renewal is coming soon and I’m kinda worried as I have yet to pay residence tax. I’ve never received a single postcard or letter for it since I got here 😥😥 so I’m starting to worry if it’ll affect my upcoming renewal.

Any help will be appreciated.

  1. How much did you earn august 2021 to December 31st 2021?

It’s possible, that after tax deductibles, you’ve not earned enough in 2021 to incur resident tax. I.e your taxable income was ¥0 for 2021.

2021 resident tax is billed June 2022 to May 2023.

2022 resident tax has not been billed yet. Billing will start June 2023.

So depending on your taxable income for 2022 tax year (January 1st 2022 to December 31st 2022) you might find you get a bill around mid June 2023 or if your employer withholds then from your June 2023 salary onwards you will pay via “special collection”

  2. Do you have a MyNumber Card? You can print out your residence tax data at any convenience store in Gifu for 150 yen, and will need that form to renew your visa anyway. If it says that you owe nothing, then you’re good.

ETA: Oh, I see you are now in Fukui. I don’t think you can do it for another city…

  3. FWIW the tax application season is still going on, so residence tax payslips will probably show up in April/May
