Does anybody know if you are allowed to make payments to a hospital after a surgery and a hospital stay? Or is it a one time lump sum they expect when your discharge?

In my experience, they’ll send you a bill some weeks after discharge. I recall prose that came with the bill offering options if you can’t pay all at once.
They have payment plans if it’s a large enough sum, and there is also a system to get back a chunk of the money that you spent (assuming you have National Health Insurance). You don’t need to worry about all that. Just worry about getting better.
