Pension (Returning)

I left Japan more than two years ago. I did NOT withdraw my pension because I was going to move back. However, I did not move back and after two years, you lose the right to withdraw your pension.

I’m wondering if anyone has done this (above) AND moved back to Japan.
I want to know, if I worked in Japan again would my pension be 0 – as if I never paid into it before, or would it continue where I left off?

  1. It should continue. I had an absence of over 2.5 years, and the process to resume my pension was straightforward. Of course do your own research, but hopefully the anecdote is some reassurance.

  2. It will continue where you left off.

Your pension number will be the same, so just make sure to give the pension number to the pension office/new employer when/if you return. If you can’t find/remember your pension number then it should be linked to your MyNumber.

You can also check your pension record real-time on NenkinNet (but registering your account when no longer a resident is likely not possible, but you can give it a try): https://www.nenkin.go.jp/n_net/
